Feast your ears on this.

The conversation usually goes something like this. “J.J., we’re coming through northern California next month. If you have a few nights open, we’d like to drop in and play.” Invariably a blank slot or two is found.

With dates set the Moody’s calendar soon reveals upcoming appearances by some of the country’s most influential jazz acts.

It’s no coincidence that musical luminaries like Mose Allison, Josh Roseman, Shotgun Wedding Quintet, Dapp Theory, Ralph Alessi, Jen Chapin and Will Bernard have appeared before appreciative Moody’s audiences.

The Truckee, Calif., bistro has an established reputation as a tour stop for artists winding their way around Northern California and across the Sierra Nevada mountains. That they’re working with J.J. Morgan, Moody’s Bistro & Lounge co-owner and front-of-the-house persona, is simply icing on a tasty cake.

J.J. cut his teeth promoting jazz acts at his Up and Down Club, which was at the forefront of San Francisco’s reemerging early 90s jazz scene. When he and Executive Chef Mark Estee opened Moody’s, there was no question the establishment was to host some of music’s finest talents.

Moody’s commitment to the art doesn’t end at their stage, either. Each summer, a handful of jazz artists are invited to work with area children at the Jazz Artists In Residence summer camps. By day, the kids receive free instruction from bona fide musicians. By night, the kids’ parents and aficionados from near and far sit in on jams performed by those same talents, while enjoying the exquisite food and drink that makes Moody’s so enjoyable.
